Author, educator, & copywriter.

About Me

I’m inspired by the impact and transformative power of words. I’ve always been drawn to imaginative stories and powerful wordplay.

Born in Nashville and raised in Detroit, I’ve found home in Stone Mountain, GA. As a graduate of Grand Valley State University and Georgia State University, I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature with an emphasis on professional writing and an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education. I’ve worked in education and as a content writer for various organizations for over a decade.

During breaks from work and shuffling words around pages, I enjoy spending time with my son, DJ, sampling cuisines, exploring new places and green spaces, and reading everything from non-fiction to comic books.

Career Narrative

My first love is writing beautiful stories for children, and I’m deeply motivated by the need for more diverse characters and storytellers in children’s literature. I’ve published two children's books, Ari J.’s Kinky, Curly Crown and Ari J.’s Firefly Rescue. My third picture book, Ayo’s Adventure: Across the African Diaspora from Afro to Zulu, is scheduled for publication for Fall 2024.

By day, I’m an elementary school interventionist. My goal is for all of my students to experience the joy of immersing themselves in the magic of books. When I’m not teaching or drafting a new manuscript, I contribute to Black Girl MATHgic (BGM), an innovative STEM-based subscription box designed to build math confidence in young girls. As a content writer for BGM, I’m able to interview a range of STEM professionals, create the parent and student-facing guides, write product descriptions for items included in the box, and craft a motivational message to round out the learning experience for our young subscribers.

I’ve also been a word slinger for PR companies, nonprofit organizations, and local businesses. I revel in making brands pop and highlighting entrepreneurs and creatives with content that draws genuine attention and intrigue.

And because I’m always ready to talk books, I appreciate every moment I’m asked to speak to audiences about children’s literature and literacy or read stories to eager groups of little ones.
